IT Architect


The IT Architect will support the technical design and on-going solutioning of the Information Management eco-system with a focus on data architecture, system integration and enterprise solutions.   This role will own the ‘summary data layer’ which will enable access to integrated and harmonized data sets from the operational level, for analytics and reporting purposes. The IT architect will be responsible for designing and implementing the technical infrastructure and services to expose  this information to the organization.   Scope includes manufacturing (CMC), research and clinical data.   Key activities and responsibilities of the data architect are:

  • Define the approach and technical architecture for master data management
  • Define, model, and describe master data domains, data attributes, and reference data
  • Define a flexible, performant, and scalable technical architecture and associated integration techniques to enable key summary data from disparate research, clinical, manufacturing, and quality systems to be accessed as integrated, and harmonized datasets for analysis, data visualization, and reporting
  • Define, model, and describe the summary data domains across different functions (scientific and operational data focus), research, clinical, manufacturing, and quality, and the key data elements within those domains
  • Define and implement a data security scheme at the aggregation layer to ensure data can only be accessed by authorized users
  • Understand how data is, or will be, used and the implications for people, process, products, and technology
  • Identify and recommend technology solutions, commercial platforms, and integration tools to support implementation of the technical architecture
  • Implement data stores, data integration pipelines, data services, and data analytics and reporting solutions as needed to realize the data architecture
  • Contribute to defining the principles for sound data management
  • Contribute to defining the standards for data quality: naming, describing, governing, managing, modeling, cleansing, enriching, transforming, integrating, moving, storing, searching and delivering scientific and operational data within the enterprise
  • The IT Architect must be at ease in communicating complex technical architectures to technical and non-technical stakeholders.   This is a highly visible hands-on role expected to operate cross-functionally in a rapid-scale up environment.


1. Business, Information, Solution and Technical Architectures

  • Translate to-be business architecture into detailed technical architecture and solutions balancing risk, fit for purpose and desired outcomes
  • Champion innovative solutions that align with business needs (today and tomorrow)
  • Create and quickly evolve high through low level technical designs around business process, information flow, solution and technical architecture domains, and translate design intent into easy to understand content for business and senior leaders
  • Perform systems analysis to best recommend innovative solutions for target state, and roadmap
  • Design and manage data models in all their forms, including conceptual models, relational database designs, message models and others (master data through transactional data)
  • Present complex solutions to technical and business audiences

2. Architectural Governance

  • Determine overall IT architecture standards, guidelines, best practices and approved techniques that accurately define the as-is and to-be ecosystem
  • Define data classifications and data zoning to allow information assets to be immediately identified and proactively managed as more information becomes available through company growth
  • Design for data security requirements and solutions, and work with Information Security resources and senior leaders to ensure that data (both on-premises and in the cloud) is treated as a protected asset
  • Subject matter expertise for solving key technical challenges (e.g. systems/data integration).
  • Oversight of technical implementation for sustainability

3. Information Strategy

  • Transform the information strategy into blue-prints to achieve data integration as measured by availability, access and consistency to support exploratory and regulated analytics
  • Develop a deep understanding of company data in support of transactional and analytical needs
  • Assess the benefits and the risks of information by using tools such as business capability models to create an information-centric view to quickly visualize what information matters most to the organization based on the defined business strategy
  • Use tools such as business information models to provide the organization with a future-state view of the information landscape that is unencumbered by the specific data implementation details imposed by proprietary solutions or technologies
  • Provide the IT Leadership and senior leaders with a clear overview of the target information architecture, and coordinate change activities to ensure that delivery and operational teams can consolidate multiple data sources and repositories to deliver additional business value
  • Champion efforts to improve business performance through enterprise information solutions and capabilities, such as master data management (MDM), metadata management, analytics, content management, data integration, and related information management or information infrastructure components

4. Other duties as assigned by IT management in support of rapidly growing company.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in IT, with at least 10 years in information system design spanning data, integration and enterprise wide solutions
  • In-depth experience of designing and implementing platform and custom solutions
  • Hands-on experience implementing integrated data and analytics in manufacturing, research and clinical
  • Biological or pharmaceutical  manufacturing and research industry domain knowledge
  • Technical skills include data modeling, data warehouses, data marts, data aggregation, data federation, data virtualization, master data management, data migration, ETL, web services, data analytics, dash boarding, data visualization, and business intelligence reporting 
  • High energy, confident, gets things done, yet easy going personality
  • Understand and speak the language of the business
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation and communication skills


  • MBA or advanced IT degree
  • Three to five years prior experience as a data analyst and/or technical programmer is highly desirable
  • Ability to wear multiple hats, and sort-out complex IT challenges with ease
  • IT experience with aseptic processing manufacturing a plus



  • Knowledge of biotech business models and operating models
  • Familiarity with information management practices, system development life cycle management, IT services management, infrastructure and operations, IT Security, and EA and ITIL frameworks
  • Knowledge of business ecosystems, SaaS, infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), SOA, APIs, open data, microservices, event-driven IT and predictive analytics
  • Exposure and understanding of existing, new and emerging technologies, and processing environments
  • Exceptional soft and interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation and negotiation
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of all components of holistic enterprise architecture, business engineering principles and processes
  • Familiarity with graphical modelling approaches, tools and model repositories
  • Organizationally savvy, and understanding of the political climate of the enterprise and how to navigate obstacles and politics
  • Ability to balance the long-term ("big picture") and short-term implications of individual decisions
  • Ability to translate business needs into EA requirements
  • Ability to apply multiple solutions to business problems
  • Ability to rapidly comprehend the functions and capabilities of new technologies
  • Capable and comfortable with balancing time between foundational EA (Mode 1: ensures efficiency and predictability) and vanguard EA efforts (Mode 2: concerned with speed, agility and flexibility to achieve a unified and flexible EA that meets the organization's needs)
  • Ready to think, behave and act in an innovative consulting manner to drive the organization's strategies

  • Business domain, data/content and process understanding (which are more important than technical skills).
  • System integration experience, including interface design, and familiarity with web-oriented architecture techniques.
  • Data-modelling and information classification expertise at the enterprise level.
  • Understanding of common information architecture frameworks and information models.
  • Understanding of the differences between relational modelling and object modelling.
  • Understanding of metamodels, taxonomies and ontologies, as well as of the challenges of applying structured techniques (data modelling) to less-structured sources.
  • Familiarity with MDM, BI, Data Lake, and data warehouse design and implementation techniques.
  • Knowledge of problem analysis, structured analysis and design, and programming techniques.
  • Ability to assess rapidly changing technologies and apply them to business needs.
  • Strong communication and persuasion skills, including the ability to create marketing and messaging materials that meet stakeholder preferences.

  • Experienced in bioinformatics RNA sequencing a plus
