Primary Responsibility
This role can be based out of our Philadelphia, PA site or our Cambridge, MA site

The Senior Director of Commercial Excellence and  Strategy works closely with the Commercial Team and cross functionally to deliver on Commercial priorities and strategies. The candidate will be responsible for leading commercial excellence  functions including Business Strategy and Operations, , Business Insights and Analytics, Market Research, Competitive Intelligence, Commercial Data and Reporting and Commercial Effectiveness.
The role will be responsible for building the commercial excellence and strategy capabilities for Adaptimmune with focus on the first commercial product launch, afami-cel, in synovial sarcoma.
Will lead a team of 1-5 direct reports and collaborate closely across Marketing, Market Access, Customer Solutions, US Business, Compliance, Legal, Medical Affairs, Finance, Communications, and other functions and external partners as appropriate to develop and execute the commercial activities needed to deliver on our goals.
The role reports to the Chief Commercial Officer and will interface with the Executive Team and Board of Directors to provide updates and achieve the customer and business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set vision and drive proactive solutions that enhance the Commercial team’s performance and impact
  • Establish and implement the organization, capabilities and resources needed to deliver on the commercial excellence activities to achieve the business goals
  • Build and lead a “fit for purpose”, high performing and engaged team of direct reports and cross-functional team members to achieve our people, compliance and business objectives
  • Drive continuous excellence in functional competencies across the team, effectively recruit, hire, coach, and develop team and manage budgeting and planning
  • Lead, working in close partnership with the cross-functional team, the creation, implementation and management of business data, metrics, KPIs, dashboards, scorecards, and reports to define,  evaluate, track, and communicate business performance and progress across key activities and objectives
  • Partner closely with the cross-functional team, in particular the field leadership and IT, to create, implement and continuously enhance commercial effectiveness, including  CRM/SFA platforms, field deployment, incentives, performance, SOPs,  guidelines, analytics, data management, and monitoring
  • Partner with the  cross functional leaders to establish and execute the business analysis, forecasting, insights and market research plans to identify opportunities, gaps, and shape the business and products plans to maximize impact and the achievement of our vision
  • Define strategic content and lead cross-functional projects/initiatives, including business development initiatives
  • Support the integrated cross-divisional budget and financial strategic and operational plan (LROP) processes, coordinating closely with Finance and across the commercialization teams to ensure alignment and optimization of overall activities
  • Work closely with the CCO to develop key communications of the commercial strategy, business performance and overall commercial activities internally and externally  (e.g., business reviews, ET and Board presentations, company updates, external presentations, investor relations, etc)  
  • Consult with partners, obtain competitive intelligence and benchmarks on key industry trends / leading practices to help solve complex and emerging challenges and opportunities
  • Establish an efficient organization and processes, manage operating budget and allocate resources within bounds set by financial planning
  • Work closely with legal, compliance and regulatory to implement processes and activities to ensure the adherence to all legal and compliance requirements, implementation of our Core Values and Code of Conduct
  • Ensure that leaders in Adaptimmune are aligned, advised and informed of the business highlights, performance and progress
  • Coordinate and serve as an active member of the cross-functional Commercial Leadership Team

Qualifications & Experience

Required
  • Bachelors degree, Life Sciences and MBA preferred
  • 7+ years of biotech/pharma commercial experience
  • Strong track record of performance
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing cross-functional teams
  • Strategic builder who understands what it takes to develop a successful Commercial Excellence and Strategy  team in a biopharma, start-up environment
  • Experienced at developing and managing a strong team of professionals to support Commercial Excellence and Strategy in meeting and exceeding expectations
  • Skilled at engaging and motivating high performance of cross-functional teams in delivery of key organizational objectives
  • Skilled project leader and able to envision, mobilize and deliver on large change management initiatives
  • Proven success building a culture of high performance while ensuring a motivating and inspiring work environment
  • Must understand specialty data challenges and its varied sources, and its application in reporting, goal setting and incentive compensation.
  • Assessing and enhancing strong operational programs/processes in support of commercial  planning and execution.  Proven ability to manage multiple, complex and competing priorities to effective and efficient conclusion
  • Understands US commercial ways of working, systems and trends
  • Able to recruit and develop talent to deliver operational value and deepen organizational competencies
  • In-depth understanding of the US oncology marketplace and trends, including  in-line product experience
  • Demonstrated experience attracting, developing and leading high performing teams with high levels of engagement
  • Successful experience managing and delivering on operational budget
  • Demonstrated high level of integrity in decision-making
  • Act decisively and quickly while aligning with multiple stakeholders
Desirable
  • Experience in oncology/advanced therapies, cell therapies/rare diseases
