Associate Scientist, Stem Cell Process Development (12 month contract)

Primary Responsibility

As part of Adaptimmune’s Off-the-Shelf T cell project, this role is concerned with development of a manufacture-ready iPSC-derived T Cell product. The project team is growing rapidly to enable delivery of a ground-breaking new therapy and ensure the company’s position as a leader in the allogeneic cell therapy field. As part of this growth, associate scientists are required to join the team to help support the following duties:

  • Perform experiments based on established protocols and provide support to other staff in their experiments
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and prepare reagents
  • Maintain cell cultures and perform analytical testing of cells
  • Support/prepare accurate records of experiments by use of electronic lab notebooks and reports
  • Support/conduct data analysis, collation of results/data and communication of results/conclusions.

Whilst initially requiring supervision by a more senior scientist, the job holder will develop further scientific skills to enable them to work more independently on routine experiments. 

The Associate Scientist may also be involved in one or more support activities to enable the smooth running of the group or laboratory (e.g. Lab steward role).
Performance in this role (including functional and project objectives and behaviours) is expected to be monitored through group performance and stakeholder feedback from peers, senior management and project team members (as outlined in the development framework for this position).

Hepititus B vaccination is preferred but not essential. Vaccination costs will be covered by Adaptimmune.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Conducting experiments and supporting colleagues, the group and Adaptimmune projects (60%)
  2. Participate in group and project meetings and discussions (10%)
  3. Routine lab maintenance (30%)

This role reports to Senior Scientists within the Process Development team who have overall responsibility for scientific output. The jobholder will work to carry out experiments and will be responsible for maintaining good practice and detailed records of work undertaken. Experienced applicants will be expected to undertake experimental decision making and trouble-shooting in order to produce good quality scientific data.  The jobholder may hold a position of authority in lab maintenance (e.g. lab steward)


Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Required

  • A level or equivalent (incl. BTEC, HNC, HND etc.)
  • Ability to learn and develop in order to work independently on routine experiments within a reasonable time frame.


  • Degree in Lifesciences.
  • Experience of laboratory work, cell culture practices and/or aseptic technique


Skills & Competencies


  • Computer literate and ability to familiarise with different IT systems
  • Good numeracy and English language skills (both written and verbal)
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Ability to follow protocols.
  • Strong problem solving abilities, good time management and attention to detail
  • Strong team player.


  • Experienced with writing protocols and basic reports
  • Knowledge and skills to use standard laboratory equipment (such as pipettes, pH meters, centrifuges).
